TECHNICAL FILE - 50's, 60's & 70's hair

In this lesson Lottie taught us how to create roller sets for 50's, 60's and 70's iconic hairstyles and then we got to create one of them ourself in class. Having the knowledge of how you have to set the rollers differently for each one of these hair styles will be so useful to know for the future even though in class time we will only have time for one.

Products & equipment:
  • Heated rollers
  • Roller clips
  • Paddle brush
  • Grips and pins
  • Tail comb
  • Hair spray
 For the 50's look:
  1. Brush the hair through with a paddle brush to begin with to ensure all knots are removed
  2. Side part the hair using a tail comb
  3. As this isn't a look that requires as much height and volume as the other looks you can use the blue rollers instead of the red. Take blue rollers and roll them down on both sides of the parting
  4. With the rest of the hair use the brick work technique to roll the hair with yellow and white rollers
  5. Once the rollers are cool and have set you can remove them and style the hair

For the 70's look:
  1. Brush the hair through with a paddle brush until knot free
  2. Create a center parting using your tail comb
  3. Direct the rollers away from the parting with one blue roller on either side
  4. For the rest of the hair use the red rollers for the biggest curls and volume.
  5. Once the hair has set and cooled you can remove the rollers and style the hair. A good tip for this style is to carefully brush out the curls to get this bouncy, wild look.
  6. Finish by setting with hair spray to try and maintain the waves and volume.
  7.

For the 60's look:
  1. Brush hair through until knot free like the other styles
  2. Created a side parting but slightly further over than usual using my tail comb
  3. With the two front sections I used red rollers and directed them downwards away from the parting
  4. With the back of the hair I took 3 red rollers and rolled them downwards in a line in the middle of the back of the head from the crown
  5. I then used red and blue rollers to take two sections on either side of the 3 center red rollers and rolled them down as well but instead of straight down I made the rollers face slightly in towards the center 3 red rollers, to make sure there is volume but the hair is directed back away from the face for this iconic hair style
  6. Once the rollers had cooled I removes them and began teasing the hair and styling it into the finished do.

I decided to try out the 60's look as it is my favourite of the three hairstyles, I also love the sixties make-up as well! I would really like to do this look again but with an outfit and matching make-up especially as my model Bekah really suited this style.
