Project evaluation

My favourite part of this project was designing the six different looks for makeup and hair, styling and creating the six different images for our portfolio which were fashion, beauty and editorial based which is my favourite area of makeup and hair design so naturally I was very passionate about these images. I thought it was also really great that two had to be catwalk/backstage catwalk style images, two were advert style and two were editorials as it meant we got a great range of different types of images that we would be working on if we go on to work in the fashion and beauty industries. I like how free we were to be as individual and creative as we liked with only a few things to take into consideration, for example Spring/Summer 2016 trends for the catwalk looks, day and night time inspired looks for the adverts and then obviously taking into consideration your brands style and aesthetic to be incorporated into the designs. I loved the hair practical lessons with Lottie as she covered so many important styling techniques and never lets us leave the class without having achieved something and feeling confident. During these practicals my confidence with hair styling has gone from not very high to pretty confident, especially with braiding which was the main type of hair styling I struggled with before. I enjoyed forming teams with models, stylists and other talents to try and organise shoots however due to all students being busy with deadlines I ended up taking most of the photos myself with post production and studio set up help from my friend who studies Fashion Styling. The experience of finding four models to be able to help create my images was a struggle as studio spaces were disappearing quickly and I had to make sure my models and myself could attend the studio slots available. As I have a job I found time management very tricky with the practical side of things however I enjoyed these photoshoots thoroughly and intend to do more collaborations and photo shoots for my portfolio next term and in the free time we will have after second year is officially over. Another positive for me that has come out of all these shoots is that I have noticed my makeup application improve a lot since first year which is very encouraging, I am being able to apply makeup looks a lot quicker which was one of my difficulties in first year and I complete them with a lot more ease so it is good to know my hard work is paying off. This project was definitely a lot of work and very time consuming having to organise and plan so many shoots but I am really proud of my final images and I think they are my favourite work yet, this project was my favourite experience so far at uni. If I could go back in time I would start shooting from the beginning of February as I now know how much work and time goes into organising, designing and completing a proper photoshoot.

Giles SS16 evaluation

I am really pleased with how this image came out, I feel like the lighting and models pose showcases the makeup, hair and styling really well to suit the fashion collection it was for. I was worried that the freckles I painted on wouldn't show up properly on camera with certain lighting but I am pleased that they did. I think the dress I chose for the styling suits the Giles collection as there were loads of white, high neck dresses and I think the lace gave a regal feel alongside the Elizabeth inspired hair and makeup, I put the dress on my model back to front so the zip showed as I think this gave a modern twist and very on trend. I like the way the gold eyeshadow on the center of the lips gave a subtle antique, worn effect that goes with the royal theme. The gold metallic accent underneath the eye compliments the lip but one doesnt distract from the other, the gold accents are in support of each other. The eyelashes showcase a take on a SS16 trend while still suiting the look and the doll like wispy individual lashes don't distract from the other aspects of the makeup. I love that the braids have a very renaissance feel with the red hair and the pale skin, the hair being in a down style was also meant to represent youth in the model as in the Elizabethan era only young girls had really long hair that was worn down - This links with the doll eyelashes representing nostalgia for youth.
I struggled at first with the lighting and camera settings. The images were coming out way too warm and the light wasn't flashing so we had to overcome these technical issues, luckily I had a friend on hand who is pretty familiar with lighting set ups so after playing around with the camera for a bit and moving the light around and making it brighter and dimmer we found the perfect lighting.
Overall I am really happy with how my look came out and I am happy with the finished image, I enjoyed doing two catwalk looks as it gave me a chance to do something completely different to my first catwalk look.

Brand evaluation

I really enjoyed the brand research aspect of this project, I feel like as a makeup artist it is very important to know your brands and also to have firm favourites and to have good knowledge about all aspects of the brands you are loyal to. I chose NARS after purchasing the most recent of Francois Nars books called Makeup Your Mind, aswell as doing some initial research into the products, ethos and aesthetic. What I noticed about Francois Nars and NARS as a brand from looking through this book was that the makeup never drew attention away from the models features and natural beauty, the makeup just enhances all of these which is why I think Francois Nars is so talented. I have found it is easier to make the makeup the main focus of a beauty/editorial image but so much harder to make the viewer see the beautiful features of the model beneath the makeup then main focus. When I look at the before and after images of the models in Makeup Your Mind they look like the same person, but just a more flawless version as Francois has the eye and ability to be able to enhance the most striking features on the models face. I love that the brand ethos is to empower women and give them self confidence, to enhance their appearance rather than to mask their natural beauty when using makeup. After doing my research on NARS throughout this project I can definitely say that they have fulfilled the brand ethos perfectly with the products they produce, the beautiful looks they create and the small details like the tutorial videos for all their products to show women how to use them to get the flawless, natural NARS finish we see in all of their looks. I also looked into NARS looks created by the best NARS makeup artists at fashion week SS16 and what I noticed is that their ethos is brought into all of their looks, most of the images I saw from various catwalk shows was beautiful skin, well groomed eyebrows, a statement feature such as eyes, eyelashes or lips and just healthy, glowing models that showcase the current makeup trends and suit the fashion show without overdoing it and masking their natural features. I also now feel very loyal to NARS as a brand and have made myself a wish list of products which I wish to invest in for my kit which I have read about and watched NARS video tutorials on and I think the thought process, passion and work that goes into producing their amazing, large range of quality products is very inspiring. I am very pleased with going with NARS as a brand as inspiration for all of my photoshoots and hope that in my images the NARS aesthetic, ethos and vibe came across as well as I tried. I have been so inspired by my project development with NARS as my main influence and agree with the views the put across with their makeup and will be using the spirit as a reminder to not mask natural beauty with my makeup in the future and throughout my career.

Shoot inspiration for catwalk 2 image

To help me with direction when I am shooting I looked through some backstage beauty shots from catwalk shows to find a style I like. As I want to show off the makeup, side of hair and the top of the outfit I think a sideways shot of my model looking at the camera would work really nicely, these images are similar to what I am going for composition and pose-wise.

Favourite images from catwalk 2 shoot

These are my favourite images from my Giles SS16 catwalk shoot, so now I just had to narrow them down to one. I always take far too many photos and then struggle picking the perfect shot to retouch. I really struggled getting the lighting correct with this shoot and want an image that shows all the makeup techniques an trends I have used as well as the hair style and the top of the dress to show my styling.

Here are some images I took in the makeup room after shooting my second catwalk image with my model Holly. Unfortunately on the day my model had quite blood shot eyes which shows up in these images that I will have to edit out in post production.
