TECHNICAL FILE - Blow drying

Notes from Lotties class on blow drying:
  • Always comb wet hair with a wide toothed comb
  • Before starting a blow dry do a mini consultation on the clients hair first:                             - Is it thick or fine hair?                                                                                                              - Is it long or short?                                                                                                                   - Curly/straight/afro?                                                                                                                  - Any visible breakages?                                                                                                          - Chemical processing?                                                                                                           - Any contraindications? (e.g head lice)
  •  By doing the analysis above you will find it easier to decide what products to use
  • Blast dry soaking wet hair till its 80% dry before starting a blow dry as if you begin from soaking wet it will take forever
  • Blast drying the hair is also better for the products as if you put products on completely wet hair the water dilutes the product making them less effective
  • Use heat defence before the blow dry rather than on dried hair before straightening/using other heated styling equipment
  • Use a non sticky mousse and apply to ends and roots for volume
  • Using a nozzle on the dryer is important for directing the heat
  • Sea salt sprays are good for texture
  • For full, curly, volumnous blow drys always blow dry the fringe first if the client has one
  • Most blow drys should be begun at the crown and back of the head, start on the crown and section into a V shape.
  • Once the hair is sectioned at the crown into a V shape then section the sides off as well
  • Sections should be neat and clean to make the blow dry easier
  • Dry shampoo is a better alternative to hair spray for back combing as it is dry so doesnt wet the hair back down again and adds the texture for the style to grab onto
  •  Larger brush - To give more lift and curl
  • Smaller brush - Less lift and smaller curls
  • When blow drying more damaged hair use a lower heat on a full power setting
  • To give the best root lift position the brush beneath the hair at the root and lift the brush up whilst maintaining a strong tension
  • Keep the dryer constantly moving to avoid burning the clients scalp
  • Make sure you have dried the section of hair before curling it with the brush. Once the sections dry and you want to add the curl lift the brush up and roll it to act as a tong, the heat from the dryer will set the curl in
  • For stronger curls or to help keep the curl from dropping roll the hair back up and clip it and it will set as the hair cools
  • Paddle brushes are great for long thick hair and to achieve a sleek, straight blow dry
  • Denman brushes are great for a sleek and straight blow dry  on short/mid-length hair
  • Round brushes are for a volumnous, curly blow dry with more lift.
